Leading With Trust, Riding With Confidence

There’s a rhythm to horseback riding along the shoreline — the sound of hooves striking sand, the wind sweeping past, and the gentle sway of the animal beneath you. On the beach in Costa Rica with my wife Natalie, I was reminded that some of the most important lessons in life come when we let go of control, place trust in others, and move with the flow instead of against it.

Leadership is often compared to steering a team, but true guidance isn’t always about micromanaging every step. Just as you must trust the horse to respond to your cues while allowing it to move naturally, effective leaders trust their teams to apply their skills and judgment while they provide direction and support. It’s a balance of control and freedom, planning and flexibility.

Riding along the ocean, I noticed how much the journey matters. The view of the horizon and the smell of the salt air, create a sense of awareness that you can’t find when you’re focused only on the destination. In business, it’s easy to become fixated on metrics and milestones, but real leadership also requires presence — noticing the subtle shifts, listening to your team, and adjusting your approach in real time.

There’s also a lesson in partnership. The horse is powerful and capable, but it needs guidance to navigate the changing terrain safely. Likewise, leaders are most effective when they build partnerships — with team members, stakeholders, or clients — where trust is mutual, communication is clear, and each participant brings their strengths to the journey.

In my keynotes and leadership programs, I emphasize the importance of flow and alignment: trusting your people, being adaptable, and knowing when to lead decisively versus when to step back. Leadership isn’t just about pushing forward — it’s about moving in harmony with the strengths and dynamics around you, much like riding in sync with the horse beneath you.

Leadership, like horseback riding, is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. Trust, adaptability, and presence allow us to navigate unpredictable terrain, enjoy the ride, and guide others with confidence. Whether it’s a beach in Costa Rica or the complex challenges of an organization, the principle is the same: the most successful leaders ride with both guidance and trust, balancing direction with flow, and embracing the adventure along the way.
